With more than 70.000 (semi-transparent) solar panels and a capacity of 31,2 megawatts, the greenhouse complex with solar panels at Royal Pride in Middenmeer is unique in its kind. In very close collaboration with GroenLeven we have developed a new greenhouse concept to optimize the performance of solar panels in a greenhouse roof. This unique greenhouse project at Royal Pride a true example of collaboration!

According to Biesheuvel, the North Holland greenhouse project is different because it is a unique, new construction. "We have a lot of experience with constructing solar parks, but building a greenhouse is a different story," he says. 'That is why we have worked together with a specialist in innovative horticultural solutions who is well versed in this.'

Ruben Kalkman of Bom Group says that as part of his internship for the Horticulture & Agribusiness study at Inholland University of Applied Sciences in Delft, he started researching the integration of solar panels in a greenhouse roof about four years ago. 'I delved deep into the details to look for the combination of optimal energy efficiency and the availability of the soil underneath for growing crops.'

As examples, Kalkman mentions determining the optimal angle of inclination of the greenhouse roof, which is much lower than in traditional greenhouses, the influence of the open facades on the wind flow and the temperature under the roof, the collection of rainwater, the replacement of a broken solar panel in a long row and the load capacity of the construction with cable ducts and possible lamps.

Kalkman supervised the project together with the Research & Development department of Bom Group. 'We specialized in light aluminum roof systems, but for this construction we had to make a completely new design and subsequently developed a completely new aluminium roof system, including gutter, roofbars and ridge.'

For example, for strength calculations he used a test setup in the office, with which he could also test the water tightness and the tension on the various parts. Kalkman explains that GroenLeven had specified how many solar panels they wanted in the construction and that Bom Group developed the systems around it. According to him, it was a 'big thing' to figure out how the aluminum construction would not cast a shadow on the solar panels.

With a capacity of 31.2 megawatts, the panels provide 10,800 households in Middenmeer and the surrounding area with green energy. A system of pipes drains the rainwater that falls between the gabled roofs to a basin of 8,000 cubic meters. Royal Pride can use this basin for the water supply when growing the plants in the greenhouse.

Agri-PV Royal Pride is distinguished by several unique elements that are a true example of the multifunctional use of land surface. The semi-transparent solar panels are not ‘’only’’ generating electricty, but also transmit light which is beneficial for crop growth and agricultural use of the land. In addition, the surface under the greenhouse will be again available for Royal Pride’s business activities. The project also includes a large basin for storage of rainwater and a solar panel corridor which Royal Pride can use for storage- and packing activities. All of this comes together in a fine piece of work, where both harvest of energy as crop growth are central!
