Reaching sixty years in the dynamic world of greenhouse horticulture is no small achievement. For Bom Group, it is a moment to reflect on a rich history of innovation, craftsmanship, and collaboration, and to look ahead to the future.

CEO Johan van Geest, who has led the company for the past year, sees the anniversary primarily as a tribute to the people who have shaped the organisation. “Sixty years of success is the legacy of generations of employees, customers, and partners who have contributed to it. I am proud to be part of this story and to help build the next chapter.”

Innovation as a foundation
The foundation of Bom Group’s success was laid early on. In the 1980s, founder Piet Bom introduced the aluminium greenhouse roof system, an innovation that had a global impact. “That was truly groundbreaking,” says Van Geest. “Where greenhouses used to be built mainly from steel and concrete, this system marked a major shift. It’s comparable to the transition from horse-drawn carriages to cars. It positioned Bom Group as an innovator in the sector, a reputation we continue to build on today.”

From product to partnership
Where the focus used to be primarily on greenhouse design, the role of greenhouse builders has evolved significantly.
“A greenhouse has increasingly become a technical, integrated concept,” Van Geest explains. “Technologies such as LED lighting, climate systems, and automation are playing a much larger role. As a result, our added value is shifting from purely the product to collaboration, knowledge, and project development.” Networks and partnerships are essential in this. Joining Atrium Agri in 2019 marked an important step. “By working together within the group, we can offer customers more complete solutions and operate more strongly on an international level.”

Collaboration is part of our DNA
Collaboration is deeply embedded in Bom Group’s culture. The company deliberately works with trusted partners and subcontractors and sees itself as the architect and coordinator of complex greenhouse projects. “We cannot and do not want to do it alone,” says Van Geest. “By working closely across the entire chain, with suppliers, partners, and customers, we create better solutions. That has always been the strength of Dutch horticulture.” According to him, a successful project always starts with a satisfied client. “If the client’s business case is solid and we realise an innovative project together that is also profitable for us, then it is truly successful.”

Opportunities in a changing market
The sector is under pressure due to geopolitical developments, energy prices, and climate change. At the same time, new opportunities are emerging. “More and more growers are transitioning from outdoor cultivation to controlled environments such as greenhouses or indoor facilities,” says Van Geest. “Retailers are demanding supply security and local production. With our solutions, we can play an important role in this.”
International diversification also remains essential for managing risks. Projects often require years of preparation, making a long-term vision crucial.

People make the difference
Although technology is becoming increasingly important, one factor remains decisive, according to Van Geest: people. “I am proud that, even in a challenging market, we continue to deliver strong projects. That is the result of years of investment in relationships, as well as the energy and commitment of our people.” He encourages employees to take ownership and continue developing themselves. “Complex and challenging projects keep people sharp and motivated. It makes the work more enjoyable and ensures that we continue to grow as an organisation.”

Ambition for the future
Looking ahead to the next ten years, Van Geest has a clear ambition. “I hope we can realise another groundbreaking innovation in greenhouse construction. By intensifying collaboration within Atrium Agri, we can deliver complete, multi-scale solutions, from individual growers to large-scale food security projects.” His key message in this anniversary year is therefore clear: “Dutch horticulture has grown through collaboration, openness, and innovation. Especially in times of uncertainty, we must continue to hold on to these values. Only together can we move the sector forward.”
